"Writers Should Be Read" Summer Meeting in Michigan 2023

Sunday, February 19 2023

Daphne du Maurier's stories often illuminate the competing dual natures within individual characters, occasionally even with doppelgangers. This has long been recognized as Daphne du Maurier’s debt to The Prisoner of Zenda, one of her favorite novels from childhood. The novel spawned an entire genre known as Ruritanian romance.

Attorney Chris Peirson will discuss these      spin-offs and their influence on the works of Daphne du Maurier. Among our local members there is always quite a passionate exchange about which film version is best. Chris recommends that we watch both versions of the movie before the talk.

There is no charge for DdM Society Members and their guests to attend this event.

"Writers Should Be Read" Summer Meeting in Michigan 2023

“With eternity assured, the human being on earth is more easily expendable.”  Now that's not something you read every day!

Our Fall event will feature Univeristy of Dallas scholar, Sarah Berry, Ph.D.  who will review our 2023 Short Story Study - The Breakthrough.  The story involves a child who may have access to her dead twin’s life energy, a terminal cancer patient willing to donate his, and the real dilemma of the story arising after the death has occurred.  Daphne du Maurier's construct of various weak and odd characters at the center of a life-altering experiment is, in itself, a brilliant literary technique - sci-fi or otherwise.

The date will be confirmed once Dr. Berry has her teaching schedule.

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

5214 Palomar Lane

Dallas, TX 75229

Tea will be served.

Society members will be notified in due course of the date of the meeting and if this meeting will be available by ZOOM.

Join us for Movie Night in November!!                                          We will watch the 1975 film adaptation of The Breakthrough - Daphne du Maurier's story about the secrets of ESP and life-after-death that sets up a line of questioning that science fiction continues to examine:  at what point does technology become the internet of everything – including human experience and consciousness?  Post film discussion will follow the movie.  Guests are welcome.

6:00 pm - Box dinner  (use your ESP to guess what is on the menu)
